re:Invent 2024 Preview: Maximilian Schellhorn - Containers or Serverless Functions: When to choose what?

In the evolution of cloud computing, containers have become a pivotal technology. They provide a robust way for packaging, deploying and operating applications, with Kubernetes emerging as a leading orchestrator. On the other hand, Serverless functions provide a streamlined, event-driven model that abstracts infrastructure management entirely. In this session we'll explore the fundamental differences in architecture, scalability and operational characteristics between these technologies. By investigating real-world scenarios we'll gain insights into choosing the right approach based on workload requirements, deployment scenarios and operations. Lastly, we'll explore synergies between these technologies, demonstrating how they can be combined to leverage the strengths of both.

15:20 - 15:45

AWS Deep dive: Anton Babenko - Doing serverless on AWS with Terraform for real

As serverless technologies gain traction, companies are defining best practices, tools and patterns for effective implementation. However, those using Terraform for infrastructure as code often find themselves reinventing the wheel to manage serverless applications. Anton explains why managing serverless applications with Terraform is a smart choice. He will introduce the open-source project serverless.tf, which emerged to address the accidental complexity in existing serverless tools.

15:50 - 16:15

AWS Deep dive: Ari Palo - Why choose AWS CDK

Ari will provide an comprehensive session on the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK), a powerful framework that allows you to define your cloud infrastructure using familiar programming languages. Besides giving an introduction to AWS CDK, Ari will cover its pros and cons, along with valuable tips and best practices based on over 5 years of experience running CDK in production at an enterprise scale.

16:20 - 16:45

AWS Deep dive: Jimmy Dahlqvist - Building resilient serverless workloads: Navigating through failures

Jimmy will explore the details of building resilient serverless and event-driven workloads on AWS. While serverless architectures are celebrated for their inherent high availability and scalability, the reality of cloud computing is that "everything fails all the time". This becomes particularly challenging when serverless systems interact with non-serverless components, which may not have the same agility in scaling. In this talk, Jimmy will explore architectural patterns designed to handle failures effectively and ensure robust performance.

16:50 - 17:15

AWS Deep dive: Samuel Lock - Making a Case for Using Relational Databases in Serverless Applications

Samuel will tackle a common question in the serverless world: Why do most serverless application examples focus on DynamoDB instead of SQL databases? While DynamoDB offers a pricing model and developer experience well-suited to serverless solutions, there are scenarios where a relational database is the better storage option or even a necessity. In this session, Samuel will help you identify when RDS will be the faster or more cost-effective choice for your serverless applications. He will also cover tools and techniques to reduce friction between serverless engineers and relational database engines.

17:20 - 17:30

Break

Take a short break and relax!

17:30 - 17:55

AWS Deep dive: Dmytro Hlotenko - Journey Beyond: AWS Quest for Excellence

Dmytro will explain how serverless technologies can free your hands and streamline your workflows and how to chain AWS services together to build robust solutions. You will gain insights from practical examples, such as providing data to non-technical teams, integrating AWS SES with CRMs, expand AWS functionalities using the AWS SDK (boto3) and linking AWS Security Hub with internal systems. Additionally, hear about the challenges faced and the solutions found during the implementation of these complex architectures.

18:00 - 18:30
