Luc van Donkersgoed: It’s turtles all the way down – a journey into abstraction and modularity

Modularity might be the single most important concept in software design. But it goes way beyond software: modularity is a key concept in business, organizations, and even people. In this talk Luc will first travel down many levels of modularity – from enterprises all the way to software methods – and discuss what makes a good module. Then he will cover software architecture in detail and see how onion architecture and ports-and-adapters can help you write flexible and maintainable software at any scale.

Aaron Walker: Networkless Revolution - Embracing AWS VPC Lattice for Modern Deployment

Join Aaron for an in-depth exploration of Amazon VPC Lattice, a comprehensive application networking service that simplifies network connectivity, traffic routing, and security management across multiple VPCs and AWS accounts. This session will compare Amazon VPC Lattice with traditional service mesh tools, highlighting its role in transitioning applications from monolithic to microservices architectures.

Discover its powerful features, including a robust service directory, dynamic service network, and advanced traffic management, along with seamless integration with AWS services like IAM. Through practical demonstrations, gain insights into enhancing the efficiency and resilience of your distributed applications.

Additionally, explore practical use-cases for IPv6 migration and learn how Amazon VPC Lattice can aid in optimizing these transitions.

Linda Mohamed & Philipp Bergsmann: From MacBook to Bedrock - Lessons from Building an AI Assistant

Linda and Philipp share their journey of building OTTO, an AI-powered Slackbot, at AWS User Group Vienna. While training an AI assistant might seem straightforward, they encountered unexpected challenges as their model began ignoring significant portions of the data. Using InstructLab and deploying on Amazon Bedrock, they faced real-world bottlenecks such as slow training on MacBooks, inconsistent data retrieval and complex debugging.

This talk goes beyond the ideal AI stack to reveal the messy realities of model tuning, infrastructure decisions and the surprising lessons learned along the way.

Whether you're developing AI-powered assistants or simply curious about the challenges of AI projects, this session offers insights into achieving cost efficiency and overcoming obstacles in AI development.

17:45 - 18:20

Slobodan Stojanović: Prompt Engineering for Developers

Everyone talks about prompt engineering. Prompts seem like a magical way of communicating with LLMs. If you do not type a specific set of spells, LLM will hallucinate a rogue response.

But what are prompts, and how do they work? This talk will demystify the magic behind prompts and teach you how to use them in practice when building applications (both as a developer tool and as a part of the application you are building).

18:20 - 18:50
